Just WTF is up with Amazon.com this evening? I’m trying to place an order and I keep getting a “We’re Sorry!” message every other page load:
An error occurred when we tried to process your request. Rest assured, we’re working to resolve the problem as soon as possible. If you were trying to make a purchase, please check Your Account to confirm that the order was placed. We apologize for the inconvenience.
It’s totally unusable and just completely pissing me off.
Heh. You can tell I have a lot of patience for this sort of thing, eh?

You wanna know what’s freaky? I went to google.com one time (and wish I would’ve been on the ball and screen shotted it), and got cpanel’s default "there is no site at this domain" page. Hit F5, site loaded, assumingly from a different datacenter, but still flipped me out just the same.
That’s pretty good, but the one’s that *really* bother me are when you type in the domain name and Microsoft’s MSN "domain not found" message happens (using IE of course)… when you try again, it works, but I just *know* that Microsoft is totally screwing with me when that happens…
At one of my previous jobs I was at the receiving end of Amazon’s merchant CMS. Let me tell ya, whatever they were using to track state (JS, cookies, blood dribbled from a cow’s skull) was definitely not working, as their system would kick you out for not being logged in every ten pageloads or so. Depending on the day (weather, phase of moon, etc.) the thing was often damn near useless.
I’m curious how they managed to build an online empire around horribly inferior code. Perhaps by selling O’Reilly books instead of reading them?
Don’t they run on Windows/IIS? (I’m too lazy and it’s too late for me to actually check it out on Netcraft right now…) If so, that explains it 😉
